“Life Time Achievement Award” introduced for 2008 SP Sport Awards

“THE 2008 SP Sports Awards will see the introduction of a new award –‘Life Time Achievement Award,’ said SP Brewery Marketing Manager Mr Tzao Shen Tan.
In launching the 2008 SP Sports Awards Mr Tan said this award will only be bestowed to a highly recognised athlete or sports administrator, who wins the same category for the fourth consecutive time.
“He/she will automatically qualify for this award and not what he/she is nominated for. The prize money of K4,500 will be awarded for this award.”
He said that the likely nominee of this new award must also posses the following attributes: “good role model for sport in Papua New Guinea; has exhibited and promoted sportsmanship qualities and of course has to be in the highest ranking in both national and international level.”
The 16th year old prestigious award has been under the backing of SP Brewery since 1992 and “the Brewery is proud of that great partnership between the company, PNG Sports Federation and Foundation in recognising sporting excellence and achievements of Papua New Guinean athletes, officials and reporters.”
Mr Tan said that while the SP Sports Awards has progressed into new heights, the Brewery too, has lived up to the 2007 SP Sports Awards theme of ‘Aiming Higher.’ “The triple gold medals of our three brands in the international front is a reflection of our company’s reach for higher ground.”
President of the PNG Sports Federation Sir Henry ToRobert acknowledged SP Brewery’s continued support and appealed to National Sports Federations to submit nominations earlier.
“We have decided to launch this event earlier than usual to allow early nominations. I am making a special appeal to National Federations particularly this year to do justice to their athletes and officials by submitting their nominations as soon as possible.
“This is the least you can do to recognize the blood, sweat and tears from your membership and thus recognize their achievements regardless of whether you think they will win or not.
Sir Henry mentioned that the parties involved have decided to bring the nomination period forward to allow sports more time to nominate. He also mentioned that the gala presentation is now scheduled for 26th April 2008, a month earlier than the usual time.
He also acknowledged volunteers in respective sports for their efforts in running sports in this country with much passion.
SPB and PNGSF also commended the on-going contribution of the Support Sponsors: Air Niugini; Crowne Plaza, EMTV, Post Courier and PNGFM.
