EXPORT LAGER PRESENTS K165,000 TO PNG RUGBY UNION
___________________________________________________________

SOUTH PACIFIC EXPORT LAGER presented a massive K165,000 to the PNG Rugby Football Union (PNGRFU) on 20th September for two major Rugby Union 7s events  this year.

The events are the South Pacific Export Regional Satellite 7s scheduled from 6th – 28th October and the South Pacific Export PNG 7s scheduled from 24th – 25th November.

The South Pacific Export Regional Satellite 7s encompasses all Rugby PNG affiliations to hold local 7s tournaments as a lead up and for selection to enter teams for the South Pacific Export PNG 7s.

The South Pacific Export Lager PNG 7s will incorporate representative teams from all PNG Rugby Affiliations and also international clubs to participate for K60,000 worth of prize money.

In presenting the cheque to the PNGRFU, SPB General Manager Mr Stan Joyce said that SPB understands that in recent times, the PNG Rugby Union has been striving to bring its national team to world ranking.

“We understand that several national tournaments have been organised in order to improve and develop rugby union in PNG.

We also understand that the purpose of having the South Pacific Export Regional Satellite 7s and the South Pacific Export PNG 7s competitions is for: Identifying the winning side; Develop 7s in PNG and most of all, To select a strong 2008 PNG Pukpuk 7s side.”

Mr Joyce stated that this was not the first time SP Brewery has supported the sport of Rugby Union.

“In 2005, we supported with over K100, 000 in the PNG Pukpuks bid to qualify for the World Cup. As always, at SP Brewery, we always look at ways to develop sporting codes at the local and national level in order to set a strong foundation in PNG.”

In thanking SPB, PNGRFU President Mr Graham Osborne stated that the funds were very timely and will go a long way in the planning and organisation of the two events.

Mr Osborne said: “PNG Rugby is grateful of the wonderful support SP Brewery have given to assist us in our two domestic Rugby 7s events.  Both domestic events will serve to identify talent throughout PNG, and also showcase them here in Port Moresby in November.”

“The South Pacific Export PNG 7s will also enable us to select our PNG 7s Squad for the upcoming 2008 international calendar year, in particular the proposed “IRB Pacific 7s” to be held here in Port Moresby in late November,” said Mr Osborne.

Mr Osborne said “PNG Rugby will ensure that it will do SP Brewery proud in hosting these two events, and we look forward in working with them in the future.”
