MANAGING DIRECTOR CALLS FOR COMMON SENSE APPROACH TO LIQUOR LICENSING IN PORT MORESBY

In response to recent public discussions on the need for further liquor restrictions in Port Moresby, South Pacific Brewery’s Managing Director Mr. Stan Joyce, called for a common sense approach to be taken that includes dialogue with all stakeholders, including industries and consumers who are stakeholders in the city.

Mr. Joyce noted that liquor bans have never worked in any part of Papua New Guinea nor throughout the world for that matter.

Port Moresby has grown rapidly in recent years and liquor licensing facilities and enforcement capabilities need to be upgraded to meet those new changes.  Over the same period, companies have contributed significantly large revenues to the Government through excise and taxation and it is now for some of that money to be invested into liquor licensing in the city.

Mr. Joyce noted that a closure of liquor outlets would only force the issue underground and longer term devastating outcomes.
